Class Reaction 3

I think it’s very interesting and useful that we’re making a website/online portfolio. To me, it clearly represents the shift from paper to technology that businesses and people have made and are continuing. I feel that an online portfolio is a much better representation of a person and that a future employer could learn a lot more about who they could possibly be hiring.
Probably the most important thing about an online portfolio opposed to a paper resume/portfolio is that anyone looking at it, especially a future employer, can become more knowledgeable of someones personality and actually see what they are like. An online portfolio can show things like technological abilities, talents, organizational skills, education and awards, and many other personal things that a paper resume could not show. Another great thing about an online portfolio is that it is very easy to change and update. This way, you can show anything that could help you become a favorable candidate as an employee in a very easy manner. In my opinion, an online portfolio is also much more exciting and appealing to look at compared to a sheet of paper with a bunch of facts on it and it is a much better representation of the person that you actually are. If you make an excellent online portfolio with a lot of detail, making it obvious that you took a lot of time and patience to make it, it will show nothing but good things about your work ethic.
I think that an online portfolio is a very useful resource and having the ability to create something like this will show work ethic and attention to detail in a very good way. I also believe that if an employer was having trouble deciding between two candidates for a job with similar resumes, an online portfolio would be a great thing to have to give yourself that extra edge in the job market.

Class Reaction 2

To me, the class where we were able to go onto the roof and see the solar panels was very interesting and exciting. I am going to school for math and environmental science/sustainable energies so the fact that we were able to see the panels and hear the specifics on the operation and how it will help OCC to become more environmentally friendly.
One thing that really interested me was seeing how much more efficient today's electronics are compared to things like an old computer monitor and an old projector. It’s pretty shocking to see how much money we could save today compared to just about 10-15 years ago. In addition, I found it very interesting that the entire building could run on those solar panels. Since the government is pushing most places to become “greener,” making it possible for colleges to receive federal grants to install solar panels and other alternative energy sources, I think it is a great idea and I believe that in time, almost all places will have some sort of solar panel to cut down on costs or completely power the building. That should definitely be a priority in places where solar panels can be even more efficient because of a longer period of sunlight during the day or where there is less cloud coverage and more direct sunlight onto the panels.
All in all, I think it is awesome that OCC is making progress on becoming more energy efficient. If we do not become more energy efficient and start using alternative sources of energy, we will not be able to continue development without losing sustainability. Therefore, these alternative sources of energy should be a priority not only because of their efficiency, but so that we can guarantee that the people in the future will be able to use resources that we have today.

Class Reaction 1

In class I found the videos about Steve Jobs to be very interesting. He said a lot of things in the Stanford commencement speech that really made me think long and hard about my future and decisions that I may have to make and obstacles that might be in my way. Jobs is a prime example of never giving up and following your dreams and it was very inspiring.
I never knew that Steve Jobs was fired from Apple at one point so that was very interesting and shocking at the same time. I think it is incredible that Jobs founded Pixar and Next once he was fired, two successful companies that contributed to his wealthiness. When Jobs spoke about the struggles he went through with his health and being fired, amongst other things, it really hit home in making me realize that no matter what happens in life, if you work hard good things will happen. Obviously his life had many ups and downs, but in the end, he was doing what he loved the entire time and he was happy. What most people want in life is to find something/someone they love and that makes them happy and never give up until it is theirs. Therefore, Jobs’ speech has had a lot of impact on me because I took what he was saying as a message about life, not just the workplace.
I believe that Steve Jobs has something that a lot of people don’t have and that is the courage and willingness to fail. He never looked at a project as something that could possibly be a complete disaster and he was always confidant in all of his work. This is a trait that I’m sure most people would like to acquire, including myself. I think it is amazing that Jobs has been behind so many successful business ventures and it is also very inspiring to hear his stories of the high and low points of his life and how he persevered through all of these obstacles.
